Healthy Homes

Model house with scarf and hat - Healthy Homes

The Healthy Homes project was created to ensure that people in Frome who are at risk of cold homes get the support they need. There is also a range of support available for installing energy efficiency measures including grant schemes and low-interest loans.

Community fuel poverty training – Thursday 15 January 2026

Frome Town Council’s Healthy Homes team offers free advice and practical support along with guidance to help people access grants or low-interest loans to reduce bills, tackle damp and futureproof their homes. Whether it’s small changes like draughtproofing or bigger upgrades like insulation and solar panels, we’re here to help people create a home that’s better for their wellbeing, their wallet, and the planet.

Estimates suggest that some 10 per cent of excess winter deaths (EWDs) are directly attributable to fuel poverty and 21.5 per cent are attributable to cold homes (UCL / Institute of Health Equity). We would like to help bring those numbers down in Frome, and as you may come directly into contact with people who are more at risk because of fuel poverty we really need your help!

If you work with an organisation, community group, energy service provider or micro providers, join us for a free session to learn or refresh your knowledge about:

  • How to recognise the signs of local residents being in fuel poverty and at risk
  • What services we can offer to advise and support people
  • And how to signpost people to us

Cold and damp homes are bad for physical and mental health. Problems linked to the cold range from blood pressure increases and common colds, to heart attacks and pneumonia. Living in a home that is draughty and loses heat through uninsulated windows, walls and roofs also leads to households paying too much for their heating and increasing their carbon footprint.

As part of the project, Frome Medical Practice’s staff have been writing to patients who may require support and referring them to the Centre for Sustainable Energy’s (CSE) free and impartial energy advice service. We know that GPs are some of the most trusted figures in our community so hope that contacting people in this way will encourage them to take up the offer of support.

Energy Advice Champions offer regular drop-in advice sessions and energy advice pop-ups – visit the FTC Facebook page for details of forthcoming sessions.

Thanks to funding from Frome Renewable Energy Co-operative, our Energy Advice Champions are now able to visit the most vulnerable residents to help install simple energy efficiency measures such as draught proofing, thermal curtains, radiator panels and set their heating controls correctly.

Healthy Homes is a partnership between Frome Town Council, Frome Medical Practice and the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) as part of the National Lottery funded Green and Healthy Future Programme.
