With global instability pushing up oil and gas prices and further increases expected this summer, Frome Town Council is stepping up support for residents, businesses and community groups to take control of their energy costs.
Interest in solar is rising sharply across the UK, with major suppliers reporting significant increases in demand. Locally, Frome Town Council is responding by expanding its Solar and Beyond programme by offering clear, impartial advice on rooftop solar (PV), battery storage, home efficiency and available financial support.
Cllr Anita Collier, Mayor of Frome, said:
“People in Frome are understandably concerned about rising energy costs, particularly with so much uncertainty in global markets. While we can’t control those pressures, we can help people take practical steps to reduce their reliance on them.
That’s why we’re continuing to invest in our Solar and Beyond programme, giving residents clear, independent advice so they can make informed choices about solar, batteries and energy efficiency. This isn’t about pushing one solution, it’s about helping people find what works for their home and their circumstances.
We’re already seeing what’s possible locally. Projects like the Cheese and Grain show how investing in renewable energy can reduce costs, build resilience and even generate income over time. For households, businesses and community groups alike, solar is becoming a much more accessible and effective option.”
The case for solar is becoming increasingly compelling. According to the Energy Saving Trust, a typical UK household could save up to £500 a year on electricity bills through solar panels, with further savings possible when paired with battery storage. Excess electricity can also be sold back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee.
For businesses and community organisations, the benefits can be even greater. Unlike households, they are not protected by the energy price cap, leaving them more exposed to fluctuating costs. Local venues such as the Cheese and Grain and the Lucky Chance have already installed solar and battery systems, significantly cutting bills and reducing carbon emissions.
Frome Town Council’s Solar and Beyond programme helps residents assess whether their home is suitable, understand installation costs and payback periods, and find accredited installers. One-to-one advice is also available for households, community groups and businesses.
With independent support available locally, solar is a practical way for Frome to reduce energy bills, cut emissions and build a more resilient future.
