Frome’s community gardens

Broadway Community Garden, 2022

Frome is lucky to have several community gardens and we’re proud to work with local people to make them inviting spaces for everyone to enjoy. Below is information about some of Frome’s gardens, how they began and what you can find in each one.

St John’s community garden

Frome’s newest community garden came to the town council as part of devolution in 2024. Tucked away behind Frome Football Club, the pre-existing play area opposite has already had an upgrade, with more to come during 2026.

The new community garden, adjacent to the play area, is in the early stages of planting and development. If you’d like to get involved in creating and maintaining the space, come along on Mondays during term time between 10am and 1pm.

Please note there’s no loo at St John’s.

Contact Engagement Officer Emily Osler if you’d like to get involved at St John’s.

Key Centre community garden

The Key Centre garden

The community garden on The Mount was the site of a community centre, before the Key Centre was built in 2007. The Key Centre, garden and cabin are now owned and operated by Frome Town Council.

The garden is home to longstanding growing space, including fruit trees, berries and flowers. All the fruit and vegetables grown are donated to Fair Frome or enjoyed by the volunteers. The ‘Little Garden’ alongside has a giant willow igloo and is laid mostly to grass with a plum tree and rosemary bush.

You can hire the cabin in this garden as a classroom, art space, counselling and meeting place. There’s a kitchen and loo in the cabin.

Contact Engagement Officer Liz Stone to get involved with the Key Centre garden.

Milk Street Green communty garden is adjacent to The Griffin pub and Vallis First School. The previously underused space had a significant makeover in March 2025, thanks to Trinity Community Group, Milk Street residents, pupils at Vallis First School and residents of the Trinity area, working with Frome Town Council’s ranger team.

The garden features flower beds, benches and imaginative play structures. Find out more about Milk Street Green on the Trinity Community Group website.

Broadway Community Gardens is accessed via Oakfield Road, close to the Old Nurseries and Broadway. It was used for allotments during and after World War Two but had been underused since the 1970s. In 2019 a group of residents mobilised to save the site from development for housing and created the Broadway Community Garden Association. Frome Town Council purchased the land on behalf of the community in 2022 and it is cared for and managed by volunteers from Broadway Community Garden Association and Cultivating Community CIC.
