Frome Town Council and Frome Renewable Energy Co-op (FRECo) are working with local solar installer IDDEA to offer significantly discounted solar PV arrays for Frome residents when 10 or more households sign up. A standard 3.6 Kilowatt (kW) solar PV array usually costs around £6,000, but through Solar Streets will cost approximately £4,100 (see below for details).

The discounted scheme is possible because IDDEA can install the solar panels in bulk, saving time, transport and emissions.

Why install solar PV through Solar Streets?

Save money on electricity bills

Depending on the size of your roof and the amount of electricity you use, installing solar panels can significantly reduce the cost of powering your home. The best way to find out how much you could save is to contact IDDEA for a quote, letting them know you are interested in the Solar Streets offer.

Reduce your carbon footprint

An average household solar PV array will save about 1 tonne of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) each year (source: CAT, 2021).

Support Community Energy

For each installation IDDEA will donate £50 to FRECO’s Community Energy Fund, to support community renewable and energy efficiency projects in Frome.

What is the offer?

The amount of solar PV panels you will need will depend on the size of your roof and the amount of electricity you use.

 A 4kW solar array generates enough electricity to power an average 3-4 person household.

             4.3 kWp system costs approx £4,300

Optional extras

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. You can either use the electricity immediately or if you aren’t home during the day you have several options:

  1. Export unused electricity to the Grid, earning ~5p/unit through the Smart Export Guarantee
  2. Store electricity for use in the evenings by installing a battery alongside your PV system. A 5kW battery is £3,055 when you have it installed with the panels
  3. Use the electricity generated to heat your water tank. iBOOST is a device that attaches to your water tank, to heat your water with your solar energy. This generally saves you more money than selling your excess back to the grid.  Please note:  you need a water tank with a heating element, this doesn’t work on combi-boilers. An iBoost is £315 when fitted with the panels.

Success to date

Frome’s Solar Streets was launched in March 2019. Between April 2019 and December 2019 70 installations had taken place.  The scheme has also enabled 9kw of solar to be donated to Vallis Road Community Centre, match funded by FRECo.
