Mayor’s Column 9 January

As we start the new year (Happy New Year by the way!) I am looking forward to a really busy year for Frome Town Council. As Mayor I personally intend to continue championing and supporting those who give up their own time to help make our town the friendly, welcoming and inclusive place it is. From my visits to organisations across the town, I am aware of many people volunteering to do things that go a long way to improve the lot of everyone in the town. Two events I attended over the Christmas break really brought this home to me.

On Christmas Day, the ‘Big Christmas Get Together’ was held again at Frome Football Club. As many people volunteered to help as there were guests who wished to attend for the splendid lunch. Everyone I spoke to, whether guest or helper, said they really enjoyed themselves and many would otherwise have spent the day alone. A huge thank you from me to all who supported this event.

On New Year’s Eve I was delighted to join Rachel Clark to run her final mile and help bring her 365 Miles for WHY challenge to a close. On 1st January 2019 Rachel set out to run a mile every day to raise funds for We Hear You, the Frome based cancer counselling charity. She said she was hoping to raise £2500 but she raised awareness to such an extent, including visiting schools and sports club to get everyone involved, that she has raised over £18,000. It gave me great pleasure to thank Rachel for her efforts this year and I look forward to helping her break another world record this summer.
