As I reflect on my year as Mayor of Frome, I do so with a great deal of pride and gratitude. It has been an enormous honour to serve this town and to experience, first-hand, the strength and warmth of our community.
My journey into local politics came later in life. I moved to Frome in 1964, but it wasn’t until I was in my 70s that I considered standing for election. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to serve in a number of roles, and this year – being able to fully embrace the role of Mayor – has been particularly special.
My first time as Mayor, in 2021, took place during lockdown, which limited what I could do. This year has been completely different. I’ve made it a priority to say yes to opportunities, and as a result I’ve attended more than 150 engagements across the town.
A key focus for me has been children and young people. Visiting schools, youth clubs and meeting the Frome Youth Grants Panel has been incredibly inspiring. The young people in Frome are thoughtful, creative and full of potential, and they give me real confidence in the future of our town.
Throughout the year, I’ve been struck time and again by the dedication of our volunteers. Frome is a town powered by people who give their time and energy freely to support others. Without them, so many of our groups, charities and events simply wouldn’t exist. I feel incredibly lucky to have met so many of them and to have seen their work up close.
I’ve also had the pleasure of supporting our local arts, businesses and green spaces. Whether attending festivals, opening new ventures or visiting community projects, it’s clear that Frome is a place full of creativity and care.
There have been lighter moments too – from the Cobble Wobble and Pancake Dash to taking part in a “human fruit machine” at a fundraiser. And, of course, Christmas on the balcony was a real highlight and a moment I’ll always remember.
A particularly important part of the year has been presenting the Mayor’s Civic Awards. It is never easy to choose just a few recipients when so many people contribute to our community, but these awards recognise those who go above and beyond. This year’s winners The Pod, Purple Elephant, Claudia Pepler from the Merlin, Marilyn Burrows from Widows and Widowers Group, Jane Norris from Royal British Legion and Ted Prendergast from Safe Space Frome reflect the kindness, commitment and community spirit that make Frome so special.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported me during my time as Mayor – my partner Steve, my fellow councillors and the staff at Frome Town Council. Most of all, thank you to the people of Frome for your warmth and generosity.
It has been a privilege to serve, and I will always treasure this year.
