Mayor’s column 4 June 2020

I have been making the most of the recent weather by working in my garden and sitting quietly to enjoy the fruits of my labour when time allows. It’s a great opportunity to make the most of this enforced time at home; to relax, enjoy some gardening, spend time with close family and generally catch up on all those jobs we’ve been meaning to do.

Like many of you, I’ve found it frustrating at times to have to be socially distancing, but it’s vital to keep adhering to government guidelines in order for us all to stay safe. So, what has my working schedule been looking like this week?

As you would expect, there are no invitations to events at the moment due to the lockdown, but that hasn’t stopped me being busy!

Every Tuesday I attend the ‘morning meetings’, held by the Town Clerk, and normally take place at the Council offices but are now held on Zoom. This is an opportunity for The Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Leader and Deputy Leader of the Council and any other interested Councillors to exchange stories about the work we will all be doing during the coming week. It’s a great opportunity for us all to stay abreast of what’s happening with all our green spaces, sustainability, planning applications, community projects, finances, and many other topics and gives us as Councillors a chance to have any input we see fit.

On Tuesday evening, I wore a slightly different hat, as a Director of Fair Housing for Frome. I attended another Zoom meeting for the Landlords Association, talking to landlords about the difficulties being faced by themselves and their tenants as we start to ease out of lockdown. There will undoubtedly be increased hardship for some people who have been furloughed, lost their jobs and their incomes, and who are worried about their future. We are working hard to help steer those people towards people and places where they can go to access advice. Aside from several meetings I have been answering emails from Frome residents about all manner of things, writing blogs for Fair Housing for Frome, writing surveys and setting up future meetings, and talking to individual Councillors. So, it’s never a dull moment -on the contrary, my work is interesting, exciting and it’s immensely fulfilling.

I hope you have a wonderful week. Please be careful, look after each other and stay safe.
