A community picnic at Egford Park’s Tiny Forest is set to take place on Friday 19th September, from 3pm to 5.30pm. The event was originally scheduled for Great Big Green Week in June, but had to be postponed due to (extremely) wet weather.
Frome Town Council’s Wild About Trees Officer Helen Viner said: “Come along for some citizen science, fun activities and good company. How many bugs can you find? Can you identify all the trees in the Tiny Forest? Bring a picnic and make a fun afternoon of it! All ages welcome – tools, tea and cake provided.”
The Tiny Forest model works by planting a variety of local species into a dense space the size of a tennis court. The plants are carefully selected to grow at varying heights, meaning they can pack in many more plants than a space of the same size would normally hold. Frome’s Tiny Forest was created by Frome Town Council with the support of Earthwatch Europe, one of 12 planted across the UK as part of Defra’s national Green Recovery Challenge Fund.
Cllr Fiona Barrows said: “Frome’s Tiny Forest is a rich hub for biodiversity, of both plants and animals, and a site that sucks in high levels of carbon. Its transformation since it was planted in 2021 is truly amazing – fingers crossed for some more picnic-friendly weather and a lovely morning exploring the space!”
The Tiny Forest Community Day is free to attend and no booking or equipment is required. Join in between 3pm and 5.30pm at Egford Park.
