What to expect at a town council meeting

Frome Town Council (FTC) welcomes residents at all its public meetings. Anyone is welcome to come along (in person or on Zoom), speak at the meeting and share their views. Near the start of every FTC meeting, there is an opportunity for questions and comments from members of the public and councillors. You can ask any questions you have for councillors, share your ideas or ask about issues.

In addition to full council meetings, which run monthly throughout the year, there are four committees which discuss more specific areas of work: Community and Place, Operations and Assets, Planning and Grants.

Booking isn’t usually required, but if a meeting is likely to be busy, they are occasionally ticketed for space reasons – although you can still join online. The council chamber, where meetings take place, is upstairs, but the town hall building is fully accessible, with a lift and accessible toilet facilities. If you prefer, you can join the meeting via Zoom and still ask questions. If you just want to watch, then the meetings are streamed live on the FTC YouTube channel and can be accessed later. FTC also publish a ‘Chair’s Reflections’ article following each meeting on a dedicated ‘Decisions and Positions’ page on the website, covering the meeting’s main points.

Cllr Anita Collier said

“We’re always pleased to receive members of the public at our council meetings and hear your thoughts and feedback. We’re lucky at the town hall to have a great technical setup, which means people can join us online as well as in person, but I’m mindful that using technology can, in itself, be a barrier, especially if you aren’t naturally tech savvy, so I wanted to take the opportunity to let people know what to expect.

“If you speak at a meeting, you will need to use a cordless microphone – and so does everyone who speaks. This is to ensure those joining via Zoom or watching YouTube can hear the people in the room. However, if you aren’t keen, we can offer you a chance to practise before the meeting starts, or we can read something out on your behalf if you prefer. We want you to feel comfortable – and heard.”
