Whether young or old, the importance of play in our lives should never be forgotten.
We tend to think of it as a young person’s pastime, but it’s equally important for we older ones, too.
I love that there are so many opportunities for young people in Frome to release their energy in fun, playful and often adventurous ways. From baby playtimes, softball groups, Frome Boulder Rooms, pump tracks, and the skate park to music & dance classes, fishing, football, rugby, tennis, cycling and canoeing, there’s plenty to occupy our young people. And I’m looking forward to seeing the plans for the new co-designed space in our Mary Baily Field, too – a recreational space designed by and for our young people!
We know that play, at whatever age is beneficial, so why is it that we often forget to engage in playful activity as we grow older?
A lot of the sports mentioned above are equally enjoyable for the older population, as well as indoor and outdoor bowls clubs, and many other pastimes that are available for those with less energy or mobility.
Sometime just engaging in bingo, quizzing, swimming, or gentle game of pool is enough to keep young, to mix with others and make us feel part of the community.
Walking by our lovely river is gorgeous on a summer’s day, taking a stroll in the park, watching the cricket at the Old Showfield or running an allotment are all a boost to help keep us stimulated and allow us to feel connected.
We live very busy lives, and I know that maintaining family life can feel all-consuming, but we owe it to ourselves to take advantage of everything that’s on offer, that can give us a much-needed break from the treadmill, and help give us back our sense of perspective.
With all these options at our fingertips, wouldn’t it be great to engage in something playful, that satisfies our need for fresh air, exercise, company, and stimulation, as well as knowing that either physically or mentally, we’re looking after our health in the best way we can.
I hope you derive pleasure from whatever is your thing, and whether young or old, I hope it brings you joy.
