Mayor’s column 17 September 2020

Autumn is certainly upon us but how lovely to enjoy a few sunny days before things start to get a lot colder.

There was a full Council meeting last week, with a lively agenda including updates on the Boyle Cross, Wild about Trees, and a presentation from Dougie Brown to tell us all about Active & In Touch. I hope you’re able to get out and about, but if you’re stuck at home and feeling lonely, please think about contacting Active & In Touch. They offer a befriending service and match lonely people and lovely volunteers, and often it’s the start of some wonderful friendships. The organisation caters for all ages from 18+ and has helped so many people during lockdown, with numbers growing almost every day. If you’d like their help, or you’d like to volunteer, please go to their website: https://activeandintouch.weebly.com/

As part of Frome Town Council’s plans, I’m still working with neighbourhood groups to understand more about how we can build on them, and how we can bring Frome closer together with a series of little communities around the town.  Does your street have a neighbourhood group?  Is it part of a larger one? Neighbourhood support networks have been springing up all over Frome since lockdown due to Covid-19. The community response has been inspiring. Now there is a move to map all the neighbourhood groups across Frome so they can link up and share information and ideas. This has the potential to help us build stronger, more resilient communities within Frome for whatever the future holds. So far Frome Town Council have heard from 20 street networks in Frome, all supporting their neighbours in a variety of ways. If you would like to join the growing network you can register here: https://www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk/neighbourhood-groups-across-frome/.

The Community Cupboard on Feltham Lane, and the Community Fridge in the Cheese & Grain car park are regularly topped up with some wonderful produce. It’s a great way for us to reduce food wastage, so please help yourselves. They’re open to anyone, regardless of need.

Also, rather than buy unnecessary items, or bulky items you might only use occasionally, why not think about becoming a member of the Share Shop? Just like a normal library, you can sign up as a member, reserve your items online and borrow any items you need that they have in stock for as long as you need! Visit Sharefrome.org to see how you can sign up.

Please take care, stay safe and enjoy your week!
