April Fool! This news release is not true…
Frome Town Council has announced a new scheme that will see its ranger team equipped with specially adapted solar-powered hats. The initiative forms part of the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and exploring practical, low-impact solutions to support frontline services.
The custom-built hats feature integrated photovoltaic panels, allowing rangers to generate renewable energy while working outdoors. The energy collected is used to power small equipment, including strimmers and hand tools. Cllr Mark Dorrington said:
“We’re always looking at innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact while maintaining high standards across Frome’s green spaces. This trial allows us to make the most of the time our rangers already spend outdoors, turning sunlight into a practical resource.”
The ranger team has been involved in testing early prototypes over recent weeks, with initial feedback highlighting both the functionality of the design and the additional shade provided during longer shifts.
Ranger Mike Wright said “They’re surprisingly comfortable, and it’s satisfying to know that the work we’re doing is being directly powered by renewable energy. It’s a small change, but it all adds up.”
If successful, the scheme could be expanded later in the year, with potential adaptations for seasonal staff and volunteers.
Residents may begin to notice the new hats in use across parks and open spaces throughout April.
