Celebrating the start of Christmas in Frome

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the Christmas Tree lights being switched on in the town centre 2 December 2016. Thousands turned out for the occasion.  This year’s festive switch-on event was a family-friendly celebration. There were several food stalls selling locally sourced festive food such as posh hot-dogs, Christmas dinner, pizza and mulled drinks.

Local musicians Rocktopus entertained crowds before the carol service commenced. The switching on of the lights followed, by Frome resident Olympian Bronze medallist Emily Diamond. Frome Town Youth band played the music to accompany the traditional Christmas carols.

Mayor of Frome Toby Eliot, who compared the evening said “It was great to see so many people in the Market Place last Friday to celebrate the start of Christmas with carols around the tree and the switching on of the Christmas lights by our own Olympian Emily Diamond.

This year we were told that a more intimate, family focussed event was required. As a result, we brought forward the timing to allow young families to come but still be home in time for bed.

I’d like to thank all of those who were part of the lantern procession from St John’s Church and to Frome Town Youth Band who provided a marvellous accompaniment. We must also say a big thank you to the merry band of street cleaners provided by id verde. The George Hotel, Rocktopus, Postscript and our Christmas Tree sponsor, Hunter French, all contributed to a great evening.

Most of all though thanks to everyone who came along, particularly everyone who brought or made a lantern, and created such a wonderful atmosphere.”
