Travelling by train this Christmas

24 December until 2 January Network Rail will be carrying out improvement work in the London Paddington and Cardiff areas over this year’s Christmas period.

London Paddington will be closed to all rail services from Saturday 24 December to Thursday 29 December. This means that anyone using GWR rail services starting and finishing at Ealing Broadway, will need to make a connection to the underground, or scheduled bus services for travel into London. Ealing Broadway does not have step-free access. GWR is therefore recommending that customers on the Bristol and South Wales services, who are travelling with heavy luggage, children, or who find steps difficult, change at Reading and use services from there to London Waterloo.  This will regrettably mean a longer journey; GWR will be alerting customers to the changes well in advance so they can plan ahead.

GWR recommends using the National Rail Enquiries website to plan your journey:

  • select London Paddington (PAD) as your destination
  • click on ‘More options, railcards & passengers’
  • enter your chosen alternative London terminal where you see ‘Travel via’
