Successful sustainability events continue this summer

Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Natalie Barnett with Matt Mellen, Climate Action Lead at FTC

Frome Town Council is hosting a free event on Tuesday 17th June from 9am to 10.30 am to the town hall, aimed at Frome-based businesses and landlords who would like to explore the benefits of solar energy. There will be opportunities to hear from solar installers and local businesses, explore funding options, and discover how to turn your rooftop into a revenue-generating asset.

The event, part of the council’s Solar and Beyond project, follows on from two recent successful and well attended events on a sustainability theme. On 13th May, the first workshop for Frome’s Act to Adapt project, co-hosted with Somerset Wildlife Trust, saw around 120 people gather at the Cheese and Grain. Attendees explored climate projections for the region and started to make a plan about adaptation to a changing climate.

Natalie Barnett, Climate Adaptation Officer at Somerset Wildlife Trust said –

“It was great to hear so many good ideas. Our next steps is to compile everyone’s input into a draft report, working towards a full Climate Adaptation Plan for Frome.”

Frome Town Council and Somerset Wildlife Trust will be inviting more input to the draft adaptation plan via community engagement at the Carnival fundraiser in Victoria Park on 7th June and also at the River Festival on the 15th of June. The final plan will be published and shared later on this year.

In addition, a new renewable energy initiative launched in Frome on 20th May, with a visit from renowned renewable energy entrepreneur Howard Johns. He invited the people of Frome to link up their homes and create a “People’s Power Station”, following the successful rollout of similar schemes in other parts of the UK.

Howard Johns said – “Frome is the perfect next place for us to launch. We are looking for engaged, switched on communities to link up and join in. Frome’s legendary independent spirit and can-do attitude is key to the success of this scheme.”

Matt Mellen, Climate Action Lead at Frome Town Council said –

“There has never been a better time to install solar panels. Whether you are a business or a homeowner, Frome Town Council is delighted to offer free and impartial advice. Just get in touch if you would like to find out more.”
