School’s out for Summer

With the school holidays now upon us, many of the usual summer clubs and classes may not be running this year, indeed some of the activities that Frome Town Council (FTC) had planned have been put on hold for the time being.

So, FTC have come up with some inventive ways that can help with playing out safely this summer, so there’s still fun to be had!

Look out for some fly-by fun coming to the parks and open spaces this summer. Every Monday in the summer holidays, play workers from Super Pirates will be roaming around town: in the parks, the Showfield, the Town Centre, Rodden Meadow and more.  The Super Pirates’ mission is to inspire children to be the most awesome people they can be, ordinarily hosting summer clubs they have adapted and will be bringing along a bag of tricks to keep families and young people entertained and (safely) spreading a bit of joy where they go.  Keep an eye on FTC’s Facebook page to see where the Super Pirates will be around town.

Alongside this, there have been some new (environmentally friendly) additions to Victoria Park and the Mary Baily playing fields.  FTC want everyone to enjoy the parks and open spaces safely this summer so have spray painted shapes onto the grass; they are all least two metres apart which will help with social distancing.  There are some picnic blanket shapes around the bandstand, which is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic while keep your distance, and a rounders pitch next to the play park in Mary Baily,  so don’t forget to bring a bat and ball for a family game.

Cllr Maxine Crawley said: “It’s been a hard for kids over the past few months and while we have to follow government guidelines, this means we can’t deliver what we had planned for the summer – we don’t want them to miss out so are pulling together activities like these which can still make playing through the summer fun and safe.”

If and when guidelines allow for larger numbers of people gathering together, FTC have some open access play activities ready to go too. Watch this space and keep an eye on the FTC website: www.frometowncouncil.gov.uk

Let’s get Frome playing safely this summer.
