Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Check on others.
The Met Office has issued a rare Red Extreme Heat Warning for parts of southern England, warning of potential danger to life and significant impact on daily life and services. The South West is also under a Heat Health Alert.
Frome Town Council is encouraging residents to take extra care during the current period of extreme heat, particularly older people, young children, those with health conditions and anyone who may be isolated.
Avoid leaving your house if you can stay cool there, and don’t make unnecessary journeys. However, if your home becomes too hot, you are welcome to spend time in one of Frome’s cool spaces:
Frome Town Hall council chamber
From midday to 5pm on Tuesday/Wednesday & Thursday 9am to 5pm/Friday 9am to 4.30pm
Cheese and Grain
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday – all day
Rossetti House Care Home, Welshmill Lane, BA11 2AA
Cool space and cool drinks available 8am to 6pm.
The Key Centre
Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. No air con; chilled drinks available.
Frome Medical Practice (for patients and visitors)
Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm
We would also encourage residents to consider:
- Churches and community venues (we’ll update this page with any new information)
- A shady wooded area – tree shade can make the temperature feel 7 to 15 degrees lower
Stay cool
- Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Avoid strenuous activity.
- Keep blinds and curtains closed on sun-facing windows.
- Carry water when travelling.
- Check on neighbours, friends and relatives who may be vulnerable.
- Never leave children or animals in vehicles.
Read Met Office guidance for promoting wellbeing in older people during very hot weather.
