Mayor’s column 24 October 2023

I recently met Otis, a pupil from St Louis School. He told me how he wants to make Frome a plastic bag free town. I spoke to him and his mother and following our conversation, Otis wrote to me. I have now invited them to the Town Hall to discuss his ideas.

On a similar theme, I had the pleasure to present a Mayor’s Commendation to Bea Baylis, Year 7 at Oakfield Academy. Bea has set herself a target of collecting 100 bags of litter and raising £100. She has collected nearly 50 bags and already raised over £300! She wants to raise awareness about our environment and climate issues. These two pupils demonstrate how aware young people are about our local environment and climate issues. We owe Bea and Otis and all young people to safeguard their future and that of our community.

If you know someone, a group or an organisation in Frome who have gone out of their way to help and support others, show kindness, volunteer, or any community spirited activity, please nominate them by contacting me directly.

The Lantern Workshops are well underway but there are still more to come. This year’s theme is ICE. The parade is a Frome spectacular and part of the Christmas Lights switch-on on Friday 24th November. I am also looking forward to the Drone Show on the 4th November but please can I remind everyone that there is absolutely no parking so please walk and donate, donate, donate!

Halloween is almost upon us and is conducted in different ways by many cultures. For some it is a time to remember loved ones that have passed and to be with those we hold dear. Enjoy the evening and be mindful of those around you in your community.

On Saturday 14 October, I was at Badgers Hill, Frome Town FC V Mousehole (1:O to Frome!). Lisa Merryweather and I were there to provide information about the newly formed Frome Town Community Benefit Society (FTCBS). They sate, “Our mission is to help create and run a thriving and dynamic community asset which brings sporting, social, economic and educational value to Frome”.

Your help is needed to achieve this by becoming a member of the FTCBS. You are also encouraged to attend the AGM on Thursday 30 November.  FTC has organised a meeting at Badgers Hill Venue at 12.00 Wednesday 1st November for Community Organisations of Frome. Come and join us for a chance to develop the community offer at Badgers Hill.

I am off to continue promoting buses in Frome and cleaning more bus shelters! Contact me if you fancy joining me. In the meantime, look after yourselves and those around you. Check on those who may be glad of some contact and company. The Frome community is brilliant at doing this.

You can contact me directly at the Town Hall on PCampagna@frometowncouncil.gov.uk
