Mayor’s Column 17th October 2019

What a great week this has been!

On Monday morning I donned my gardening gloves to help the Frome Town Rangers plant some delightful hedges around the tennis courts at the Mary Baily playing field. It was a drizzly day, but it didn’t dampen their enthusiasm and that of all the other wonderful volunteers who also came out to help on the day.

Frome Chamber of Commerce held their annual general meeting on Tuesday evening, and it was a great insight into how they support so many of the retailers and businesses within the town.  It’s a busy Chamber that’s always looking for new ways to promote Frome businesses and encourage local trading, but their work is frequently done behind the scenes and often doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, so well done them!

On Thursday, I was happy to support the awards evening for Frome’s Gateway Club, which caters for those with learning difficulties in Frome. It was a great event and I enjoyed presenting the Achievement Cup to Stevie, who has been relentless in his collection of crisp packets and milk bottle tops to raise money, even though he’s often been poorly. It was a lovely evening and featured the Frome Flukes who kicked off the evening with some lively music!

On Saturday morning, I really enjoyed saying a few words at the Frome Farmers’ Market to celebrate 20 years of trading. There are eight markets currently operating in Somerset and Frome is the largest free-standing market of them all! We’re lucky in Frome to host not only the local farmers’ Market on the second Saturday of the month but also to see some of them trading at the monthly Frome Independent Market too. It’s a thriving market with between 20-30 stallholders displaying their produce, most of which is locally grown and organic. If you get the chance, please pop down and have a browse – you’ll see a fantastic array of food, drinks and crafts.

There’s lots of work going on behind the scenes at Frome Town Council, too. All Councillors and staff have been working together to set the strategy for our next four years in office. The collaboration has produced a really strong plan which will continue to build on the great projects currently running and to produce some exciting new ideas for the future!
