Frome Town Council’s Healthy Homes Team is hosting a free training session at Frome Town Hall on Thursday 15 January from 10am to 12pm, to help local organisations and interested individuals recognise and support people affected by fuel poverty.
The training is open to anyone who works in the community who may encounter people affected by fuel poverty, to help them spot the signs and find out how to help. The session will cover:
- How to recognise the signs of fuel poverty
- What support the Healthy Homes Team can offer
- How to signpost residents for help
Estimates from the UCL Institute of Health Equity show that around 10% of excess winter deaths are directly linked to fuel poverty, and 21.5% to cold homes. With winter pressures increasing, the team hopes that frontline workers and volunteer groups can play a vital role in identifying people who may be struggling.
Cllr Lyndsey Mayhew said:
“Fuel poverty is, sadly, a problem for many people in Frome. By equipping local staff, volunteers and community groups with simple tools and awareness, we can reach those who need support the most.”
The Healthy Homes Team is part of Green and Healthy Frome, a lottery-funded partnership between Frome Town Council, Frome Medical Practice and Edventure. The team offers tailored guidance, home energy advice, practical support and help accessing grants or low-interest loans. The aim is to reduce bills, tackle damp and futureproof homes so that they are healthier, warmer and cheaper to run, with associated benefits for the planet.
