Frome’s popular annual Walking Festival returns from 7 to 9 August, offering a fantastic programme of guided walks over three days, celebrating both the town’s fascinating history and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it.
With 16 walks to choose from, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a gentle stroll, a chance to discover hidden corners of Frome, or a longer countryside ramble. The festival is also a great opportunity to explore another section of the Frome Ring (also known as the Frome Walking Wheel), the long-distance circular walking route that showcases the area’s rolling hills, ancient woodlands, picturesque villages and far-reaching views.
Many of the walks are free, although booking is essential for some as places are limited. Copies of the Walking Festival programme are available from the Town Hall reception and the Discover Frome information point in the library.
Mayor of Frome Mark Dorrington said: “Many thanks to the team at Walkers are Welcome and Frome Selwood Rotary for making this year’s event possible once again.
“Have you ever wanted to know more about the people whose names you see on plaques around town, such as Clara Grant, Edward Cockey (the one with the lamps), Alice Seeley and Jenson Button, who even has his own bridge? Or perhaps you’d like to discover the stories behind Frome’s lost pubs. Whatever your interest, the Walking Festival has a walk for you, so take a look at the programme and find one that suits you.”
Tricia Golinski of Frome Walkers Are Welcome said: “As usual, the programme is designed to be inclusive and, among the 16 walks on offer, there’s a Nordic walking event suitable for all fitness levels, opportunities to explore Frome Dissenters’ Cemetery, and a more challenging nine-mile walk taking in Great Elm, Buckland Dinham and Orchardleigh.
“The festival is also a wonderful chance to experience the stunning countryside on Frome’s doorstep. Several walks venture beyond the town into the surrounding landscape, and walkers can enjoy another section of the Frome Ring, discovering peaceful paths, beautiful views and some of the area’s most picturesque scenery. Whether you’re a seasoned rambler or simply want to get out, enjoy nature and learn something new, there’s something in the programme for you.”
Some walks need to be booked in advance. Walking Festival programmes are available from Frome Town Hall, Discover Frome and Victoria Park Community Café, or online at www.discoverfrome.co.uk/frome-walking-festival.
