Mayors column 12 March 2020

This week I have been pleased to attend a wide variety of events, and the coming week looks much the same! This has been one of the joys of my mayoral year so far, meeting people and organisations from all walks of Frome life.

Last Thursday I was delighted to help a local author, Andrew Ziminski, launch his book ‘The Stonemason’ at Hunting Raven. Andrew has lived in Frome for many years and has written a fascinating book of British history seen through the eyes of one who builds and restores our most historic buildings. Highly recommended, and yes, I did pay for my copy!

I celebrated International Women’s Day by attending a service on Friday at St Catharine’s Catholic church, where we were treated to a programme written by Zimbabwean women. Saturday saw me back in church, just down the road at Christchurch where there was a 12-hour event to raise funds for tree planting in drought-ravaged Darfur.

This Sunday (15th) I’ll be back in a church, this time Wells Cathedral, for the installation of the new High Sheriff of Somerset, Mary-Clare Rodwell. This year we formed a good friendship with the High Sheriff, and I hope to build on this in the coming year. It’s always good for us to have friends in Taunton.

Closer to home, this Saturday (14th) sees the annual Armed Forces Day at Frome FC. This is the day the club invites all those who have served their country to attend a game as their guest, and funds raised will benefit the Royal British Legion. I am honoured to be invited and hope to see you there.
