A colourful new mural has appeared in Frome town centre following a graffiti and street art workshop led by muralist, Tom Sturgess. The workshop is part of Frome Town Council’s year-long community art programme, delivered in partnership with The School of Graff.
Through workshops, courses and mural projects, the programme will bring new public artworks to the town while providing creative opportunities for young people.
The community art programme was developed following a town-wide discussion about graffiti held by Frome Town Council in July, which invited residents, businesses and young people to share their views. The initiative responds to concerns about increased tagging and vandalism affecting both public and private property, while recognising the value of street art as a creative outlet when delivered in the right settings. Through workshops, courses and mural projects, the programme aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills and contribute positively to the town.

Workshop leader, Tom Sturgess said, “I know from my own experience that many people are first drawn to graffiti when they’re young. What makes a difference is having somewhere to take that interest and people who can help you develop it. These workshops are about sharing skills, opening up conversations and showing how street art can be explored with communities allowing young people to have something they can point to with pride long after the paint has dried.”
Cllr Nick Dove said: “It’s brilliant to see young people transforming spaces across the town through art. That’s exactly why we’re supporting projects like this, which nurture creativity, encourage positive engagement and create colourful murals that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. I look forward to seeing even more artwork appear across Frome over the coming year.”
The community art programme aims to promote positive ways to engage with graffiti and street art, encouraging young people to use their creativity to contribute to the town in a lasting and meaningful way. The School of Graff is now recruiting for a free four-week course for young people aged 13 to 18 interested in graffiti and street art.
