Moving Times for Somerset Skills & Learning

During the last eleven years, Somerset Skills & Learning’s (SS&L) Frome Centre has been based at Frome Town Council’s Saxonvale site. Not anymore!

From 1 October 2019 SS&L are opening their new centre on Frome’s vibrant Palmer Street, part of the St Catherine’s Quarter. The location of this new purpose-built centre will mean that SS&L is now located firmly in the heart of the community in which it serves.

SS&L delivers a wide range of education services to young people and adults across Somerset, including training and development courses, apprenticeships, qualifications, community learning plus workshops and short courses. They are a customer-focused organisation, working closely with Somerset communities, and are committed to changing people’s lives for the better. SS&L have 5 centres across Somerset, Frome being the newest addition since the opening of the Taunton Centre (Head Office) in March 2019.

Chief Executive of SS&L, Susie Simon-Norris says, “Our investment in Frome’s new town centre location firmly cements our commitment to training and adult education in Frome and the surrounding area. The new centre boasts 3 large training rooms, all equipped with the latest technology, which will enable our learners to have the best possible chance of succeeding.”

SS&L have worked closely with Frome Town Council, and have been supported with a grant of £50,000 towards the refurbishment costs. Frome Town Council have also rented office and teaching spaces to SS&L over the summer months.

Mayor of Frome, Mark Dorrington says, “SS&L are a massive part of Frome’s educational scene, so we’re delighted to support them on their journey to a new location in the centre of town. It’s a really accessible location for many of the local residents looking to learn and we hope it will encourage even more to access their courses, from basic English and maths to computer skills and apprenticeships there’s something for everyone.”
