Mayor’s Column 4th July 2023

It was a real pleasure to be able to attend the Quadripartite Twinning Meeting in Rabka-Zdroj, Poland, last month. Also attending were delegations from the twin towns of Murrhardt, Germany, and Chateau-Gontier, France.

We were warmly welcomed by the Mayor of Rabka-Zdroj, Leszek Swider and his amazing team. I was accompanied by Justin Worringham who is the Chair of the Frome Twinning Association.

Discussions were held regarding the nature of future twinning activities and how we could and should involve more young people form our four towns. We were all in agreement that this was the way forward.

Our hosts were most hospitable, and all delegations enjoyed the evening of traditional Polish music, dance and food. Old friendships were strengthened and for me, new friendships formed.

I am very much looking forward to travelling to Murrhardt in September later this year for the 40th Anniversary of the Frome – Murrhardt Twinning.

Back to Frome and I would urge as many of you as possible engage with the Frome Town Council and Frome area Community Land Trust (FACLT) “Frome’s Housing Crisis?” meeting.

It’s being held on Tuesday 18th July at Frome Town Hall from 7pm-8.30pm . We would very much like to hear your views on this subject. Go on-line and share your housing story at bit.ly/fromehousing or you can email info@frometowncouncil.gov.uk

Frome Festival is fast approaching, and the programme of events looks as exciting as ever. The festival organisers have yet again been able to attract varied and vibrant performers, artists and speakers covering a wide range of genre and styles. I am looking forward to attending many of these over the festival period. Be sure to visit the box office and secure your tickets as they are selling fast!

I am always amazed at the wonderful people and organisations that operate in Frome. Many do so by volunteering and giving their time for free. Many offer help to people by providing support when it is most needed. To this end, I would like to announce The Mayor’s Commendation. This is an award that I will present to individuals, groups and organisations that have demonstrated the qualities mentioned above and who make an outstanding contribution to our community. If you would like to nominate someone or an organisation for The Mayor’s Commendation, please contact lflaherty@frometowncouncil.gov.uk

I hope you are able to enjoy some of the good weather and spend time with family and friends. Take care and do not hesitate to contact me or any of my colleagues if we can help in any way.
