Mayor’s Column 15th August 2023

Hi everyone.

We seem to be having a summer of changeable weather with plenty of rain. Quite a change from this time last year’s period of excessive heat! Our environment is changing, and we no longer have defined seasons which is a consequence of climate change. We all need to do what we can to help stop climate change. Together we can make a difference.

Having visited a number of community organisations recently, one common theme has emerged, this is the need for more volunteers to come forward who can freely give their time and effort for community service.

Volunteering allows you to connect with people, make a difference to their lives and make our community a better place. Also volunteering gives you the opportunity to

  • gain new skills
  • make new friends
  • improve physical and mental wellbeing
  • improve confidence
  • be part of the community

Here are some of the organisations I have spoken to who are in need of volunteers:

Frome Carnival Club – they need volunteers to join the club, help with marshalling and the organisation of the carnival itself which takes place next month. They are also looking for sponsors to help. Reach them here: https://www.fromecarnival.org.uk/

Active and In Touch – many more volunteers are needed to help at the cafe at the Medical Centre, alongside helping their befriending service, and also for Frome Community Drivers. You can reach them here: https://www.activeandintouch.org/

Victoria Park cafe – cafe volunteers to help serve, clear up and prep food in this lovely addition to the park: https://www.victoriaparkcafe.org/

Mendip Community transport – in urgent need of additional Volunteer Community Car Drivers to help with hospital appointments etc: https://www.mendipcommunitytransport.co.uk/

Discover Frome Information Point – volunteers needed as Ambassadors at the Information Point to aid visitors and residents as this is the first port of call to find out about what is going on in the town and particularly buses! Full training will be given, to find out more about the position email info@frometowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01373 465757.

Please consider how you might be able to give your time and help to one of the many organisations in Frome. I will be volunteering at as many of these as I can and would encourage you to join me even if it is only for an hour or two. The organisations are always extremely grateful for any help offered. Let’s make it something to do over the next few months and give volunteering a go!

Take care and if I or any of my colleagues can be of any help, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
