Mayor’s column 12 April

Each year, at the beginning of April, the Council organises the Annual Town Meeting on behalf of the town. The Mayor hosts the meeting for the town and I not only gave a summary of highlights of the year but also has the pleasure of giving awards to just some of the great people that help make Frome a wonderful place.

The meeting was last week and we also heard from those who received your vote in the People’s Budget last year. There were loads of groups that put on fantastic events and each gave a short report. It was great to be reminded about all the community workshops and schools events that the ‘light the night’ lanterns project organised. As a result the great switch on of lights in the centre of town was a magical, mass gathering of lanterns. This project has won your vote again this year! Frome’s Missing Links showed how imaginative and creative they were in raising awareness and having fun encouraging children to cycle and walk to school.

Fair Housing Frome won the main grant last year and used it to find out more about housing issues in town. They have recently been successful in attracting much greater grant funding to try and solve some of our housing problems.

Each group said that the People’s Budget enabled them to pull in more funding from outside town and really made a difference.

You can still take part in the People’s panel town vote this year. There are 3 projects… a town orchard; a dog poo powered light or a giant slide event!  You have to be over 10 to vote and voting ends on the 3rd of May.  It takes less than a minute to vote and you will be part of something brilliant that contributes to Frome for years!
