Playday at the Key Centre – and a play area upgrade

Cheryl Sprinkler, crossing patrol at Playday 2026

Mayor of Frome Mark Dorrington will officially open the extended play area at Tower View on Wednesday 5 August at its National Playday event. The day also celebrates work to improve The Key Centre and restore it to the community since the town council took the facility over in early 2025.

National Playday is marked across the UK on the first Wednesday in August. Frome’s event features free skate lessons for children and adults with Soulful Skate Company (bookable on the day), a stay and play with Purple Elephant family support charity, free refreshments, live music from Frome Street Bandits and a range of activities to appeal to the whole community.

The event runs from 2pm to 5pm, before moving across to Tower View for a picnic and more music from the street bandits, after the ribbon-cutting at the play area at 5pm. Free picnics are provded for children, with cake for the adults and hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day.

Keyford Ward councillor Philip Campagna said “The Key Centre has been restored to its rightful place as a vibrant community hub. This year’s Playday event is packed with brilliant activities for all ages – and they’re all free, including the refreshments, so do come down to have some fun on 5 August. In addition to toys and board games, there will be willow crafts with Mary Cross, cyanotype pictures with Caravan Arts and bike ramps with Super Roots.  And Cheryl Sprinkler will be there on crossing patrol, providing a special blend of road safety and silliness!”

The Playday event runs from 2pm to 5pm at The Key Centre, Feltham Lane, BA11 5AJ and continues after 5pm on Tower View, a green space immediately opposite. Mayor of Frome Mark Dorrington will officially open the new play area at 5pm.
