Share your ideas for Market Yard

What would you like to see in Frome’s Market Yard? More than a car park, Frome’s Market Yard is the home of many markets, and often the place people arrive in when they visit the town centre. The riverside area is surrounded by places that are important to our town’s culture and community: Frome Library, the Cheese and Grain, Canoe Club, Black Swan Arts and Frome Museum.

Frome Town Council want to revitalise Market Yard, creating an attractive gateway to the fantastic independent businesses in the town centre, and a vibrant and welcoming space in its own right. They’re welcoming all ideas, from huge and ambitious new projects to small improvements that would make a difference to you.

Some residents have already shared their ideas, with proposals ranging from more planting and litter-picking to a new riverside amphitheatre and a shipping container food court.

One person shared: “I’d love to see a new almost river level board walk created along the bank for a stretch of the river. That would allow people to connect with the river in a way they aren’t able to at all. I can imagine in the summer people sitting on the edge dangling their feet off the edge and into the cool water.”

Another suggested: “Similar to the work undertaken at Boyle Cross over the years, beautifying the market yard area in a way that reflects it as a town centre asset. This could be planters, growing spaces, sculptures, trees, cobbling an area of the car park, outdoor art or street art (continuing on from the colourisation of Westway), in order to make the market yard a more attractive place to hang out and host a market.”

You can also suggest events and activities you would like to see at Market Yard, and things you would like to see in the cultural venues surrounding it.

Cllr Nick Dove said: “We are right at the beginning of this exciting work to revitalise the Market Yard and help our town centre thrive. The Market Yard is a space with so much potential for improvement, and getting it right will benefit the entire town centre; as a key arrival point, it’s often people’s first impression of Frome. Your ideas will drive this project forward as we work towards an ambitious co-designed vision that benefits Frome residents, businesses and venues.”
