Mayor’s column 30 November

I’ve got a real sense of anticipation this week… It started last week when I helped unveil the decorated post box in the precinct… if you haven’t seen it take a moment to visit, it’s been decorated with images from Ted Lewis-Clark’s Christmas stamp.

I’ve bought an advent calendar for opening the first window on Friday. In fact I’ve got two cards from the lovely collection at Hunting Raven Bookshop (I love the old fashioned pictures and tiny windows to open) and I also have an advent candle this year…. It’s going to be a hectic 5 minutes before breakfast with advent windows to open, a candle to light and tea to make!

Of course on Friday we will all be able to gather in the Market place around the newly refurbished Boyle Cross for the Christmas lights Switch-on. We breed our own celebrities to switch on the Christmas lights… a few years ago it was Jenson Button and now Ted Lewis-Clark!

I’m really looking forward to hearing our home grown samba band this year. They will be leading what promises to be a sea of lanterns, arriving from every direction, into the centre of town. We all then get the chance to sing carols to get us in the mood for the festive season. Festive food and drink will be available and naturally the wonderful independent shops, that Frome is so well known for, will be open.

On Sunday there will be the last Independent Market of the year… always a big and bustling affair. I’ll be collecting, along with many others, for the wonderful, generous, Big Christmas Get-together and Fair Frome.

And to cap it all, Boots is all kitted out with scaffolding to upgrade its frontage. Great to see the whole of the centre of town getting a face lift!
