Mayor’s column – 22nd May 2024

The first of many columns from me, your new Mayor Andy Jones. Thank you to my colleagues at Frome Town Council for choosing me to represent them, and especially to my predecessor Philip Campagna, who has definitely left very big shoes to fill. My knowledge of Italian food will never match his, and I probably won’t be as prolific on social media, but I hope to put my own stamp on the role. It’s a privilege to represent such a wonderful town, that my wife Anne and I have called home for six years.

Since chairing my first council meeting on 15th May, I’m happy to say that my diary is filling up fast. I joined the brilliant Multicultural Frome last Friday in Victoria Park for their picnic get together, celebrating cultures around the world by bringing and sharing traditional dishes. They do fantastic work making the world a smaller, friendlier and more delicious place!

On Saturday 18th I attended ‘A Spring Concert’ with Bratton Silver Band at the Merlin and on Sunday I helped out at a community day, showing youngsters how to plant seeds at the beautiful Vallis Farm, where they employ no-dig, biodiversity-boosting techniques in growing food and caring for the land.

The best way to get in touch, and to ask for your event to be added to my diary, is to email Laura Flaherty at  lflaherty@frometoencouncil.gov.uk. You can also follow Mayor of Frome on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And you can always call 01373 465757 with any questions or requests for FTC staff and councillors – we’re here to help.
