Frome Wild Bunch Column – Supporting recovery

Hello, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

In this month’s column, we’re celebrating the launch of Frome’s Nature Recovery Plan and looking at how we can all play a part in making our town more wildlife-friendly.

On Tuesday 20 October, the Wild Bunch was delighted to support the launch of the Nature Recovery Plan at a sold-out screening of Heal the Land at Frome Town Hall. The evening brought together residents, wildlife enthusiasts, and local experts to explore how we can help nature recover in Frome.

Developed by Frome Town Council, with support from local experts, environmental organisations, community groups, and residents, the Nature Recovery Plan sets out a shared vision for protecting habitats, supporting wildlife, and creating a greener, more resilient town.

One important point recognised in the plan is that Frome Town Council owns less than 5% of the land in Frome. While the council can make a difference by managing its own land for nature, this highlights a huge opportunity for the rest of us to get involved.

Our gardens and outdoor spaces could make a real difference to local wildlife. Around half of the UK’s mammal, bird, and insect species can be found in gardens. Imagine what we could achieve if more gardens provided food, shelter, and safe places for wildlife to thrive. Planting pollinator-friendly flowers, shrubs, and trees, leaving patches of grass to grow, creating habitats for insects, and making space for hedgehogs are all simple ways to help. Gardens can also act as stepping stones for wildlife, connecting green spaces and helping species move around our town.

As a volunteer group, we want to make it easier for everyone to get involved, whatever their level of experience or the size of their outdoor space. That’s why we’re pleased that the Wild Bunch is recognised in the Nature Recovery Plan as one of the key stakeholders, with a role in supporting its actions through wildlife gardening outreach. As part of our involvement and offering, we’ll be launching a wildlife-friendly gardening advice service in the new year. We’ll be offering visits, practical ideas, and advice to help residents make their gardens and outdoor spaces better for nature – whether you have a large garden, a tiny courtyard, or a balcony. Watch this space for more details!

In the meantime, we’d love you to join us in helping wildlife thrive. Find out more about the Wild Bunch and sign up for updates.

Finally, as we head into autumn and winter, please remember to check bonfires carefully for hedgehogs before lighting them. Ideally, build your bonfire just before lighting it. If you find a hedgehog that appears poorly or underweight, please contact Keyford Hedgehog Rescue for advice.
