Keyford Hedgehog Rescue & Rehab (KHRR) is a small European hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation centre based in the Keyford area of Frome, Somerset, that has been running since 2021.
KHRR’s members have been trained in wildlife and hedgehog first aid and rehabilitation by organisations including Vale Animal Hospital and Secret World Wildlife Rescue. They are not vets and if a hedgehog is beyond their skills they will be referred onto a local veterinary practice.
They also work and co-ordinate with other local hedgehog rescue organisations and people.
KHRR follows best practice guidelines as established by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, Vale Animal Hospital, Secret World Wildlife Rescue, Zoological Society of London, RSPCA, and others.
They aim to provide for the five needs of animals in their care as set out in the Animal Welfare Act 2006, namely:
- The need for a suitable environment
- The need for a suitable diet
- The need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns
- The need to be housed with, or apart, from other animals
- The need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
Keyford Hedgehog Rescue & Rehab is a Community Interest Company (number 16491200) meaning that they are not-for-profit and all of their funding goes into hedgehog rescue, rehabilitation and conservation.
