Some of you may remember that I have been Mayor of Frome before, in the 2019 – 2020 mayoral year. Because of Covid and the lockdown, my official events tailed off sharply at the end of the year, but not before I had the honour of laying the council’s wreath at the Memorial Hall on Remembrance Sunday.
At the service I was invited to visit the Dissenters’ Cemetery at Vallis Road. Despite living nearby for many years I was unaware of its existence until then and was delighted to find an oasis of calm and a home to nature. Secretary Jim soon roped me in to become a volunteer and I became a trustee until standing down earlier this year.
We often think of cemeteries as gloomy, even frightening places, but this one is different. Although it remains a working burial ground, much of the site is left wild, providing a safe habitat for many species of flora and fauna. Guided talks are held throughout the year, giving visitors the chance to learn about its history, including notable Frome residents and Commonwealth War Graves.

Some young people have volunteered as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, including at least one who gained the gold award. So I was delighted to read that three more Frome College students had attained the highest award this year; congratulations to them and the staff and volunteers who guided them.
Another group providing opportunities for young people in Frome is the Army Cadet Force who meet at the Drill Hall, Keyford. Recently I accepted an invitation to visit their open evening and see the activities they enjoy, including learning a musical instrument and exercises in the open air. It was obvious that the young people were relishing the activities being offered and how it helps their personal development. It also brought back many happy memories of my time in Frome Air Cadets.
Finally, another plaudit for our Town Rangers. At the Frome in Bloom awards evening I was delighted to accept on their behalf the magnificent Rossetti House trophy in recognition of their upkeep of Victoria Park. Well done all of you, you are a credit to the town and the council.
