Mayor’s column – 18th June 2025

What a great start to being your Mayor! This month it’s all about pride!

June is Pride month, celebrating the LGBTQ community, and I was delighted to be asked to open the first Frome Pride Youth event, running as part of the Independent Market. It was a fabulous day with events organised by the young members themselves, including live music, disco, craft activities and an evening party.

I’m also taking pride in Frome itself and the many organised events I’ve already attended. Some of those include meeting The High Sheriff of Somerset, watching a wonderful film by Robin Meader of OpenStoryTellers, supporting the fundraising evening at The Blue House, meeting the staff at Palmer Street Bottle, attending the annual St. Aldhelm’s Well dressing, presenting an award at the Climate Film Festival Awards, rolling up to the Party in the Park at the Victoria Park cafe (listening to the amazing rock choir), promoting the D2 bus timetable in the Market Place, attending the Frome Society’s talk on the Duke of Monmouth, glorying at the exhibition at The Black Swan by the Frome Arts Society, and meeting the team behind Dogs for Health.

All this in just two weeks and it’s just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening in our incredible town throughout the year. So many wonderful groups, entrepreneurs, charities and businesses, all contributing to the magic that makes us Frome. Is it any wonder I’m proud!

I’m just about to take off on holiday for a week or two, so for the next edition I’m proud to be asking Fiona Barrows to take over my column. Fiona is the new Chair and Leader of the Council and is so full of ideas to help us work better and smarter than ever, so I’m sure she’ll have lots to tell you.

I’m hoping to come back to a sunny and busy Frome as we lead up to the fantastic Frome Festival on 4th-13th July – it’s a magical festival with so much we can all be proud of. Head to the Frome Festival website or pick up a programme when you’re out and about. Many events are already in my calendar to attend as Mayor, as well as those I shall be going to, just as me.

Until I’m back, I wish you a warm and enjoyable June and as I transform into holiday mode, I’ll be wondering… what are you proud of? I’d love to know.

As always you can reach me on acollier@frometowncouncil.gov.uk and/or if you’d like me to visit your group, please email lflaherty@frometowncouncil.gov.uk.

Speak soon and please take care.
