Mayor’s column 7 December

If you weren’t in the centre on Friday then you missed a great ‘Switch on the Lights’ night… as predicted there were masses of lanterns and the arguably the best lantern was in the sky… the moon looked fantastic. Hundreds of people gathered to join in the beginning of the festive season in Frome… many thanks to all of you for making the event really memorable.

This time of year many of us want to remember others and contribute to charities or good causes. Last week a neighbour of mine took me by surprise when she knocked on my door and handed me 2 cheques. She said that she always donates something to charity this time of year and could I choose the charities this year. Amazing! Another great benefit to being Mayor this year. There are lots of ways to support the wonderful charities in town, not just by giving money but helping out in other ways. We are particularly good at contributing and volunteering in Frome and helping out like this, with no strings attached, enables the organisations have the capacity to fundraise for specific projects.

I could mention loads of worthy causes but here is just one that needs your support this week.

On Sunday morning WHY… the counselling charity for those affected by cancer, have organised a Santa dash on the old Cheese Show Field (near the hospital) in Frome. If you’re reading this and you haven’t registered for this festive fun run then I’m afraid the deadline for registering was yesterday… BUT it not too late to support the Santas and every runner old or young will run that little bit better if you get up to the show field and show them your enthusiasm. The Christmas runners will be stretching and flexing their muscles to warm up for a 9.30 start.
