Mayor’s column 24 May

Well, who’d have thought it? This is my last Personal Piece. By the time you read this I will already have handed over the chain of office. I’ll be proposing Richard Ackroyd as the next Mayor but it takes an election process at the council meeting on Wednesday to confirm things and who ever is Mayor, they will take over this slot.

Each Mayor does things a little differently and that keeps the role fresh and interesting for both the town and the Mayor I think and it is a privilege to be elected Mayor. You have to step up and challenge yourself to be in the spot light… an uncomfortable place for me but those that encouraged me to stand simply said, ‘do things your way’ and that is what I have tried to do. I found this comforting quote a few weeks ago… ‘To endure uncertainty is difficult but so are most of the other virtues’. Bernard Shaw. Uncertainty does follow many of us but there are loads of people around up for helping to dispel some of the uncertainty, the skill is noticing them.

Many thanks to the umpteen different people, groups and events that I have visited. Frome would be a less supportive and less interesting place to live without you all. I have learned a lot from you and hope that I’ve managed to promote your work through these pieces and by simply talking to lots of people about what you do. The support of the staff at the Council also boosts the publicity and knowledge of the Mayor so there is much to thank them for too.

Thanks everyone and best of luck to the next Mayor of Frome. Know that you don’t do this job alone…  you will have a fantastic year!
